Inside the learning brain
Is neuroscience the beginning of a new age, or the latest in a series of scientific fads? Startups tout “brain-based” education. Conversations about lifelong education highlight neuroplasticity. What do we know for sure?
Join us to engage your brain in brains – tackle big and small questions from “what is this fMRI thing anyway” to “how do our brains respond when we hear a sentence that make sense does not?” to “What can neuroscience say about education, and what can’t it say.” Drinks and snacks will be provided.
- Virginia (Ginger) Berninger, UW College of Education professor, is a licensed psychologist, a former teacher, and conducts research into the neuroscience of writing, reading, and comprehension., Her work pursues an understanding of education from the social context to individual brain systems and neurons.
- Lee Osterhout, UW Department of Psychology professor, leads the Cognitive Neuroscience of Language Lab, focusing on the measurement of brain changes related to language comprehension, use, and learning. He is fluent in neuroscience techniques, and can describe the difference between an ERP and a fMRI with ease.
- Lauren Graham, Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences postdoctoral fellow, studies the neural mechanisms of both impulsivity and fluid intelligence. Her work combines both human and animal models through behavioral, imaging, and computational study.
